"D.I.Y. storytelling for Slum children in Bangkok"

Here again as I mentioned about updating my blog after a while. This post is about my "Thesis Bachelor project" 2013.

Let's start!! (would be a lots of detail for this post but as you might understand that I did it for 2 semesters.)

The project is about "Enhance Family Relationship for Underprivileged Children", in this project focuses on "Slum community in Bangkok, Thailand". According to the user background and behaviour, the most parents are supposed to work and eventually lack of time to take care of their children mentally. Thus, the problem would effect to these children when they grow up by being neglected from adult.

"The design intention idea is to highlight the existing sharing moment between parent and child with happiness and appreciation of being with family. The real happiness which doesn’t need to physically taking long time but last long in mind."

The concept is to make "A quality of time" for parent and child by embedding design into the user's overlapped routine which is in the bedtime. It is the best period of time that both parent and child could participate to each other properly and make the most meaningful  moment. From this step, the project could reach the point of making more participation and create meaningful moment.

The diagram shows how design concept will be generated from the insights and design criteria.

“The final design comes up with "Storytelling" D.I.Y toy which is added on mosquito net. The small space inside the mosquito net creates an imagination of the environment in the story that makes more enjoyment to the kids. Besides, the storytelling is one of the best communication what people can share something to each other.”

The experimental mobiles

In this concept, the structure has been designed to be a random imbalance structure because it is more flexible to the user and about the balance of mobile. The others mobile which are an actual structure can occur the mistakes by making imbalance structure and it doesn’t look strong enough. So it comes up with this idea to make the mobile be a part of the story, “cloud” is the mobile and was made in black to be invisible at night, following the suggestion.

The story came from "7 stars chicken (Thai local story)

The story is on the package in case that parent can not remember the story or someone does not know the story. The type of story has been chosen by “Moral” concern. It helps parent to remember the whole story and guide how to locate the characters. The box is simple, made from cardboard paper for low cost production. This is give away product, so the cost is one of the concern.

The instruction is in the box as an image info to be simple for the user just to have a look at the picture and follow it. In one package contains 23 characters. There are also markers and ropes in the box.

  • Meaningful
As a DIY (do it yourself) product, handmade objects is always valuable. We always value things we did by ourselves no matter how it looks. So the design makes value of it. Beside, family’s time spending creates memories. When parents guide their children to draw things, they will softly hold the children’s hand. It somehow give tenderness to the children and teach them to be more conscious.

  • Essential
As a giveaway product, the budget does not need for them and it is supposed to be used in “the mosquito net” which is already exist. Therefore, the design effectively fits the user and community.

  • Routine blended
“Bed time” is the time they mostly spend together. In stead of lying down inside the mosquito and waiting to sleep, there is the activity which motivate the kids and they can have more participation.

  • Participation
The story type of final design is “the existing story” but the usability creates more engagement.
Even though the story has been changed to be the existing story because it solves parents’s problem that they can not create open-ended, DIY handmade is the solution that both users will involve more effectively.

"I think that design can fulfill human’s life by making the happiness in family. A lot of children are suffering because they lack of love and that's sad. From my opinion, design brings human well-being, not just only in terms of physical or life style, but also the value of being alive. "

I am back and Myanmar trip.

It's been so long since the last time I updated my blog. uhh yes.. It was over a year ago. So today I will write the topic about "past and memories".

I just realised this feeling after I graduated (just a month ago). Now it's time to move on living in reality, become a worker. I recognise myself that the last 2-3 years ago was the best moment of my life until now. Many things have been changed by time, actually by me.

Well, I did many things this year but for the "refreshing" post, I'll update the trip I did with my german lovely friend, Lucas, the boy on the postcard in the previous post. He came to visit me in Bangkok and I spontaneously joined his trip in Myanmar. It was a great time there. We met 2 strangers from Switzerland who now became my friends.

Here's the VDO I made for our trip.

Me

Myanmar (or Burma) is actually my neighbour. Shame on me that I hadn't been there before I decided to bring myself to see something new close to my skin. As a Thai who have been living in Bangkok for quite a long long time, I would say that Myanmar is out of my expectation. The country is not so developed. I had to beware of the food sometimes. By the way, I'm sure I'm an easy-going person but I really couldn't get used to the local food. Plus! the city is not that clean. (don't wanna be pretentious but trust me)

(a fantastic sunset in Bagan)

Here I come to the best part of the trip and it's the point why I love this country. The people are so nice and friendly. The first day that we arrived, we immediately took the bus from Yangoon to Bagan. We met two boys on the way to Bagan. They were speaking french and sitting in from of us in the bus. "Moritz(Momo) and Baptise(Baba).

(We eventually felt in love with this postcard seller. She is so pure and cute.)

This is one of my experience that I want to share since I disappeared from my blog. Actually, I'd love to write something more about my extreme adventure this year, but I think I should keep them for the next post.

Have a nice day// Schönen tag :)
